Terri DeRose Scholarship

As was announced recently at the annual CMC Excellence Awards luncheon presented at MagNet, the CMC has set-up a scholarship in honour of Terri DeRose. Here are a few excerpts from President Tuppy Blair’s speech:

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Terri DeRose for not only being such a great friend to the industry but an inspiration to us all.

At the CMC we have always wanted to honor her legacy in some regard. Today, we have this very special announcement. In honour of Terri and her contributions to magazine publishing, we have created The Terri DeRose Scholarship Award at Ryerson T Chang School of Business.  Every year, for the next 5 years, students will be asked to submit an application with the winner being awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

This October when the winner is announced, I will be joined by Terri’s husband Gerry and their daughter Stephanie. When Gerry was contacted, he was overwhelmed with emotion and honored that the industry was naming a scholarship in Terri’s name.

We know that this scholarship will be an ongoing reminder of Terri’s many accomplishments  - as a mother, wife, friend and industry leader - and endure as a way of remembering and acknowledging her life, cut short far too soon.

Please stand as I offer a toast to Terri DeRose and the newly established Terri DeRose Scholarship at the Ryerson T Chang School of Business!”

CMC - The Name Says It All

As was also mentioned at our 2009 annual meeting, there is discussion on a possible name change for the CMC. Before we go any further, let’s just say this discussion is completely in the infancy stages and no decision of any kind has been made.

First, a bit of background. Our web master Dimitry is currently working on the re-design of our website. From this exercise, a fairly vigorous board exchange has ensued on the identity of the CMC and what it stands for today.

In 2011, we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary. From those days in the early 80’s, our industry has evolved tremendously. We are not only Circulators but are Consumer Marketers, Directors of Audience Development, Newsstand Specialists, Account Executives, the list goes on.

Today, the CMC represent all sides of the magazine industry. Within this context, some feel it’s time to find a name that truly reflects what it is we stand for.

Many of us, of course, like the acronym CMC. The brand is strong through the perseverance and diligent work of past and present CMC Board members as well as our truly dedicated membership. Going forward, CMC could simply stand for Circulation Management of Canada. That’s one idea that has been tabled.

Or…we could go in an entirely new direction looking at a brand new name that might, we repeat might, better reflect the membership today and the work that all of us do.

At this point, all we’re looking for is your feedback. So please take a few moments and reflect on the ideas we’ve presented, and look for a formal questionnaire coming soon...

From the CMC, please have a happy, safe and relaxing summer!
