December 2008

On behalf of the CMC Board of Directors, we wish you a truly happy 2008-2009
HOLIDAY SEASON!

All of us need a few special activities over the holiday season. That’s why we offer our own special list, not only for yourself but your friends, family and colleagues as well. Just see this as the CMC’s version of “bobbing for apples”.

None of us can ever forget this one simple fact. Magazine sales drive our industry. Though it’s true, everything we do as an industry supports this concept, ultimately sales are the bottom line.

And with that thought squarely and securely on our radar, we offer these timely hints for 2008, which of course need to run long and hard into 2009 as well:

1.  You can make a difference.
2.  Support your industry.
3.  Buy a magazine subscription (or two or three) for the many people you care about. Give magazines as holiday gifts.
(And to that end, see the great offer from Magazines Canada below.)
4.  Support the many retailers who sell magazines at newsstand.
5.  Buy a couple of single copies today. Remember, dealers need to be rewarded. Supporting Canadian retailers with your purchase supports more than just them – it supports all of us!
6.  Promote the value of magazines to your friends and family. Talk up what it is that we all do. Make people aware of our industry and what we have to offer.
7.  Get involved. Participate. Comment. Keep up to date. Write a comment in a blog. Get involved. Stay involved.
8.  Magazines provide information, commentary, overview, perspective. Never forget that.
9.  Magazines are truly affordable and are a great value. Never forget that either.

And finally,

10.Collectively, this industry needs to constantly come up with refreshing and innovative ways to keep itself fresh, relevant, energized and to the point. Our future depends on it. So this is our promise to you our members – look for that focus in all CMC sessions coming in 2009. Our plan quite simply is to lead by example.

And from Magazines Canada, how’s this for an offer:

Magazines Canada Launches 2009 "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" Subscription Campaign

Magazines Canada is proud to announce the launch of its fourth Buy 2, Get 1 FREE subscription campaign. This exclusive, limited-time offer runs from December 15, 2008 to March 15, 2009, and provides remarkable savings on 170 diverse Canadian titles. Targeted to magazine readers across the country, the campaign offers a wide range of magazines, from national to regional-interest titles on topics including family, fashion, business, arts and literature, recreation, lifestyle and more. Customers can visit 1free.magazinescanada.ca to browse the selection of titles, choose their three magazines—and only pay for two.

”The steady growth in subscriptions over the past three campaigns is encouraging," said Michael Fox, Senior VP of Circulation & Development, Rogers Publishing, and a volunteer who has been driving the campaign for the last three years. "With magazines themselves as the incentive—buy two, get one free—it encourages people to try out new magazines. The catalogue and website provide exposure and orders that many small- and medium-sized magazines would otherwise not be able to afford.  Magazines Canada's 2009 cooperative subscription campaign is financially supported by the Government of Canada through the Canada Magazine Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Media Development Corporation, Canada Post, Quebecor World, Cornerstone Group of Companies and CDS Global.
